Concrete Polishing - A Multi-Step Process

Concrete polishing is a multi-step process that involves mechanically grinding and honing the surface of a concrete floor to achieve a specific level of smoothness and shine.

The specific steps we follow can very based on the condition of your floor and your specific needs. Our polishing process is conducting using a wet method, and here’s what you can typically expect during the procedure:

1. Surface Preparation

  1. Cleaning: The surface is cleaned thoroughly to remove any dirt, grease, or coatings.

  2. Repairs: Any cracks, holes, or imperfections in the concrete are repaired to ensure a smooth, consistent surface.

2. Grinding & Honing

  1. Grinding involves using coarse to medium diamond-embedded segments to smooth and level the concrete surface, removing imperfections and preparing it for finer finishing.

  2. Honing uses finer diamond abrasives to further smooth the concrete surface and begin to enhance its shine, setting the stage for the final polishing step.

3. Densifying/ Hardening

  1. Densifier, a chemical hardener is applied to the floor. The densifier penetrates the concrete and produces a chemical reaction that helps to harden and densify the concrete surface. This makes the concrete more durable, resistant to abrasion, and capable of a high polish.

4. Polishing

  1. Polishing: After honing, even finer grades of diamonds are used. Polishing pads are often infused with resins that further smooth and gloss the concrete. This step might be repeated with different levels of fineness to achieve the desired level of shine and smoothness.

5. Sealing & Burnishing

  1. Sealing: After polishing, a protective sealant will be applied. This sealant helps to protect the polished surface from staining and water damage.
  2. Burnishing: Optionally, a final burnishing step may be performed, using a high-speed burnisher that further enhances the floor’s shine.

Each step in the process allows for customization in terms of the level of gloss and the aggregate exposure, giving the concrete a range of possible finishes, from matte to high gloss.
